私たちが暮らす里山は自然と都市の緩衝地帯であり、自然の脅威と恩恵を人にとっての価値に変換し、素材やエネルギーという形で都市に供給する役割を担ってきた。

社会の工業化の中で失いつつあったこれら田舎の役割は、高度に情報化した現代とこの先の未来では、テクノロジーとは異なる詩的で情緒的な文脈において、また物質と身体性を持った価値として再評価されるであろう。
「変換」という手法において、『辺境』はまさに最先端な場所となり得るのだ。

辺境を拠点とする私たちNottuoは、その土地や素材、人や組織に潜在する未知なる可能性を対話を通して感知し、デザインによって価値への変換を具象化するとともに、その価値を伝導する力を有することに自覚的となり、自らも価値を創造することで、辺境より未踏を歩む実践者でありたいと思う。

The "countryside" is not a lagging land of consumption, but rather a pioneering frontier of creation.
The Satoyama where we live exists as a buffer zone between nature and the city. It has long held the role of translating the threats and blessings of nature into human value, supplying the urban sphere in the form of raw materials and energy.
As these rural roles were being lost amidst the industrialisation of society, they are now—in our highly information-driven present and future—ready to be re-evaluated. This value is found in a poetic and emotional context distinct from technology, and in a value defined by physical substance and tangibility.
Through the methodology of "translation," the "periphery" can truly become the most cutting-edge of locations.
Based in this frontier, we at Nottuo perceive the unknown potential latent within the land, its materials, its people, and its organisations through deep dialogue. We give concrete form to the translation of that potential into value through design. We are conscious of our power to transmit this value; by creating value ourselves, we strive to be practitioners treading the "unmapped" from the fringes of society.
Design possesses the power to change society.
